There are many serums that are available for various esoteric uses but in terms of a broad appeal multiuse serum, Vitamin C, E Ferulic is one that everyone must have. This serum checks multiple boxes in your skincare routine and is extremely versatile and can be used for a large host of benefits. The serum three main constituents address diverse and overlapping concerns and have a synergistic relationship.
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient that your body requires. It is well-known for its role in supporting the immune system, but it has many other important functions as well. Vitamin C comes from food sources like Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, and lemons), Bell peppers, Broccoli, Strawberries, Kiwi, and Papaya.
Vitamin E is a group of eight fat soluble compounds that are found naturally in many foods. It acts primarily as an antioxidant. Vitamin E comes from food sources such as vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower, soybean), nuts and seeds (almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts), wheat germ, leafy green vegetables, avocados, and mangoes.
Ferulic acid is a naturally occurring plant-based compound with several interesting properties. It is an antioxidant belonging to the hydroxycinnamic acid family. Ferulic acid is found in various fruits, vegetables, and grains like bran, oats, rice, eggplant, citrus fruits, and apple seeds.
Topical vs systemic
While vitamin C, E and ferulic acid are required dietarily by the body (systemic), topical (applied to surface) application of these actives have distinct benefits. Topical application allows for direct delivery to the skin where the actives can exert their beneficial properties.
Vitamin C applied topically has phenomenal antioxidant properties and promotes collagen production locally. It also targets specific areas of concern, such as fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.
Topical application of Vitamin E allows for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Vitamin E is known for its moisturizing properties, making it beneficial for dry or damaged skin. It helps to hydrate the skin, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Ferulic acid has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It protects the skin from damage caused by UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors. Topical ferulic acid has been studied for its potential anti-aging effects, including its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. It can help improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin.
Ingredient spotlight
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a multi benefit active. It is a powerful antioxidant that prevents free radicals causing damage to your skin. Free radicals cause fine lines and wrinkles. Scientific studies have shown that it aids in collagen synthesis[1]. Collagen is essential in maintaining and boosting the skin’s elasticity. Vitamin C also safeguards the skin from environmental damage[2]. Environmental damage is the damage caused by the sun’s uv rays, blue light, and air pollution. Vitamin C promotes a brighter complexion by fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation[3]. Sunscreens when properly applied block only 55% of free radical production due to uv light exposure. To optimize UV protection, it is important to use sunscreens combined with a topical antioxidant like vitamin C which neutralizes free radicals which sunscreens cannot do[4].
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is also a potent antioxidant that is critical to protect against skin ageing. Scientific research shows that vitamin E shields skin from oxidative stress[5]. Vitamin E helps the skin retain moisture, fortifies the skin barrier and promotes a supple and hydrated complexion[6]. Studies have shown that vitamin E has a synergistic relationship with vitamin C and amplifies its effectiveness[7]. Vitamin E also helps maintain the stability of vitamin C in the serum.
Ferulic Acid
Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and offers protection against damage caused by uv rays[8]. Free radicals are atoms that damage cells in the body. They are caused by dust, smog, smoke, domestic cleaning products, UV rays from the sun and farming pesticides. Ferulic acid works synergistically with vitamin C and vitamin E to form a potent antioxidant package that defends against premature ageing[9].
The Synergistic effect
Vitamin C, while being extremely efficient at neutralizing free radicles, degrades quickly under uv light. Vitamin E protects the vitamin C and prevents the degradation. Vitamin E which is a fat soluble antioxidant further clears free radicals left by Vitamin C[10]. Ferulic acid which is also plant derived can stabilize both Vitamin C and Vitamin E[11]. Studies show that ferulic acid doubles the photoprotective power of both Vitamins C and E besides being an antioxidant itself[12].
The three actives act in concert where each ingredient elevates the safety, efficacy, and stability of the other ingredients and results in a potent antioxidant serum that fights signs of ageing. Furthermore, research shows that this trio even offers protection against hyperpigmentation and photoaging[13].
Product Spotlight
Vitamin C, E, Ferulic acid face serum from renée vidaal has been formulated with all the ideal concentrations of the three actives. We have also used the most active form of vitamin C, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and vitamin E, D-Alpha Tocopherol, to maximize the effects and lower the concentrations.
3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid or Ethyl Ascorbic acid (EAA) has much the same benefits as L Ascorbic acid (LAA) but with two further key benefits. Firstly, it is a lot gentler on the skin and so is less prone to cause skin irritation[14]. The second benefit being that it is a lot more stable as the ethyl “cloak” shields the molecule from light and air, extending its shelf life. Both EAA and LAA are more potent and stable than plain Ascorbic acid.
D-Alpha Tocopherol mirrors the benefits of Alpha Tocopherol but has far superior bio availability[15]. Studies reveal that D-Alpha Tocopherol is absorbed two to three times better than its counterpart, translating to a more potent antioxidant and anti-aging effect in our skin[16].
Other than the actives we have used ingredients that enhance the use of the product. We have Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid which are moisturizers. Centella Asiatica Extract and Aloe Vera Extract to calm the skin. Zinc PCA which controls the product of oils and Butylene Glycol which enhances the absorption of all active and supporting ingredients. Overall, this serum contains a variety of ingredients that work together to hydrate, brighten, soothe, and protect the skin.
Product Benefits
There are multiple benefits for the skin when using this vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid face serum on a regular basis. Firstly, it offers strong antioxidant defense against free radicals produced by environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays, delaying the onset of premature aging symptoms including wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Furthermore, the vitamin C in the serum prevents the synthesis of melanin, resulting in a more even and brighter skin tone that gradually fades acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots. Furthermore, by promoting collagen synthesis, vitamin C’s function in collagen synthesis serves to improve the texture of the skin and lessen the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera extract are among the moisturizing elements in the serum that deeply moisturize the skin to improve its smoothness, plumpness, and youthful appearance.
Moreover, the anti-inflammatory qualities of lemon peel extract and centella asiatic extract soothe sensitive skin and lessen redness. Pullulan Polymer and Saccharide Isomerate are examples of ceramide-like substances that fortify the skin barrier, enhancing its resilience and shielding it from environmental harm. Ferulic acid boosts the antioxidant activity of the serum along with Vitamins C and E, preventing indications of aging and encouraging a more youthful appearance. Finally, because Zinc PCA controls excess oil production and prevents clogged pores and acne breakouts, the serum is advantageous for skin types that are oily or prone to acne. With regular use, this serum provides hydration, brightness, anti-aging, and protection against environmental harm, all of which contribute to the development of healthier, more radiant skin.
Using it with other products
Vitamin C, E, Ferulic acid face serum combines well with Niacinamide and Hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide, a multi-tasker, tackles sebum control, minimizes pores, soothes inflammation, and brightens your complexion, and works well with other serums. Hyaluronic Acid, a moisture magnet, plumps, and hydrates without causing conflicts and even enhances absorption of other serums. Combining these Serums offers multiple benefits: boosted antioxidant protection against environmental damage, improved hydration, balanced oil production, and brighter, firmer skin.
Usage
To get the most out of your Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Ferulic Acid face serum, start by gently cleaning your skin using a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. To restore equilibrium to your skin’s pH levels, you can choose to use a toner after patting your skin dry. Apply a few drops of the product to your face. Using upward and outward strokes, evenly spread the serum over your face and neck to ensure full coverage. It usually takes a few minutes for the serum to completely seep into the skin. Apply your preferred moisturizer afterward to help hydrate and nourish the face. Since vitamin C can make you more sensitive to the sun, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day to protect your skin from UV damage. Apply the serum first when layering numerous skincare products and give each product a few minutes to fully absorb before applying the next. To avoid any discomfort, if you use retinol-based treatments, think about switching the retinol based product to the night and use the vitamin C, E, Ferulic acid in the day. To keep the serum effective, don’t mix it with products that include alpha hydroxy acids or benzoyl peroxide. Before applying the product fully, do a patch test to make sure it is compatible if you have sensitive skin.
Storage
The potency and effectiveness of the vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid face serum depend on proper storage. Keep your serum out of direct sunlight and in a cool, dark place to extend its shelf life. Sunlight exposure has the potential to break down the active components, especially the vitamins C and E, which will eventually reduce their potency. To protect the serum from light exposure, it is preferable to store it in a cupboard or drawer. Furthermore, keep the serum out of damp areas like bathrooms where moisture might weaken its stability and encourage the growth of bacteria. After each use, securely seal the bottle to keep out air and moisture, which can hasten ingredient deterioration and lessen the efficacy of the serum. While storing the serum at normal temperature is fine, freezing or subjecting it to extremely high or low temperatures can change its stability and consistency. Additionally, since too much heat might destroy the chemicals, keep the serum away from heat sources like radiators and heating vents. Make sure your hands are clean before dispensing the serum to minimize cross-contamination, and refrain from touching the dropper or bottle opening with your fingers. By adhering to these storage recommendations, you can help ensure that the active components remain intact, and the serum stays high quality throughout its use, giving your skincare routine the best possible outcome.
